A Big Payout Is Not The Only Path

By Sérgio Ferrás

A big payout buys freedom. That part I got right.

What I got wrong was treating it like the only path there.

For years, I filtered every opportunity through one question: how big can this get? The bigger the potential exit, the more I was willing to sacrifice. Sleep, flexibility, the ability to step away for a week without everything falling apart.

The math felt obvious. Grind now, cash out later, be free forever.

But "later" kept moving. And while I waited for it to arrive, I was building a life that depended entirely on me showing up every single day. The business couldn't run without me. I couldn't take a different bet even if I wanted to. I was locked in, and the only thing keeping me there was a payout that might never come.

That's the part nobody does the math on. Not the upside. The cost of waiting for it.

I started filtering opportunities differently. Not "what's the ceiling?" but "what does my life look like while I'm building this?" Some of the biggest opportunities I looked at would have eaten three or four years of my life with zero guarantee. And some of the smaller ones gave me something immediately that the big ones only promised for later.

I'm not against big bets. I still make them. But now I know what I'm trading when I do, and I need the answer to be something I'm actually okay with losing.

Because the worst version of this isn't a failed payout. It's realizing you spent years earning freedom you could have had all along.
