The #1 habit for success
Written by Sérgio Ferrás

This one habit completely changed my performance!
Knowing this now, I feel like I wasted years of my life! And you’re probably wasting years of yours as well
When I started my first company, my schedule was chaotic.
I would work every day, the entire day, into late nights.
Barely exercising. Barely having time for myself
When I was done with work, I needed to watch a 30 min comedy show just to wind down. No matter how late it was!
And so I started doing what everyone recommends – wake up early
I thought that would be the end all for success. A promise of more time for myself, avoid rush hour and see the sunrise every day
It’s all very pretty – except it’s not the actual secret
I kept doing the exact same thing, just burning the candle at both ends. Going to bed late, waking up early
What good is waking up at 5 or 6am, if you went to sleep at midnight?
You’re gonna wake up exhausted, with no motivation and getting ready to fall asleep again
The actual secret is “GO TO SLEEP EARLY”
I started going to sleep between 9:45 and 10pm every day
Everything changed after that
I started feeling energized. No need for coffee
I woke up, went for a run, got to the office before anyone else and got 1 to 2h of deep work
Focused, no noise, no meetings
To this day, that’s the #1 non-negotiable habit that keeps me grounded
It’s one of the things I told my wife when we started creating a life together. “I always want to go to bed early”
Sometimes we want to watch a longer movie or show in the evening to relax. And we do that – we’re not robots!
But we always try to get our 8h of sleep, during the week and the weekend

Indecision hurts more than bad decisions
“You are this company’s bottle neck!” This is what my cofounder told me earlier this week. As hard as it was to swallow that pill, he was right. Being a perfectionist, I tend to want to do everything myself. Every time I’m faced with a decision, I think and rationalize it. I try to do …

You are your company bottleneck
